Barrier- free in buses, trams and trains

The MVV transport companies aim to continuously modernise their fleet. As a rule, the newer the vehicle, the fewer barriers there are.

S-Bahn (suburban railway)

  • At present, about 73% of the 138 suburban railway stations within the MVV network are barrier-free; 67 stations are already ideally designed. Further enhancements will be implemented step by step.

  • Meanwhile, the new vehicles and carriages of the ET 423 series are being introduced on all suburban railway lines during regular operation. Wide doors, clear indicators for each destination as well as a modern passenger information system offer a high degree of convenience. In addition, these vehicles are equipped with a folding ramp. If you would like to use this ramp, you must inform the driver. Please note that wheelchair users should always stop and wait at the head of the train to make sure that the conductor can see them in plenty of time.

  • Furthermore, there are multi-purpose areas at the front and rear ends of the train (each next to a driver's cabin) which are easily accessible for wheelchairs.

  • In addition, there are two compartments, each reserved for four passengers with restricted mobility in the middle of the suburban railway trains; these compartments are marked on the inside of the windows.

  • • Information on the operation of lifts at suburban railway stations can be obtained from the suburban railway “Operational Centre” ("Betriebsleitzentrale"), telephone: +49 (0)89 13 08 10 75 55. Here you can find out in which stations you'll have to change lifts on the mezzanine level. If a lift is out of order, please use the emergency button in the cabin or at the stop.

U-Bahn

  • Almost all of the platforms in the 94 underground stations provide barrier-free access.

  • In addition, the new C1.9 type underground carriages with their wide doors offer significantly more space as well as increased convenience due to hinged seats which fold up easily.

  • Please note that wheelchair users should always wait at the head of the train to make sure that the conductor can see them in plenty of time.

  • Information on operation of lifts at underground stations can be obtained from the underground (U-Bahn) “Operational Centre” (“zentrale Betriebsleitstelle”), telephone: +49 (0)89 21 91 33 33. Here you can find out in which stations you'll have to change lifts on the mezzanine level. If a lift is out of order, please use the emergency button in the cabin or at the stop.

Barrierefrei Tram-Pictogramm

Tram

  • The tram network is almost exclusively served by vehicles which provide easy access for the disabled, including on night services.

  • 126 out of 148 tram stops offer easy access to disabled passengers.

Barrierefrei Bus-Pictogramm

City bus

  • The MVV predominantly uses low-floor buses equipped with boarding aids (wheelchair lifts or folding ramps).

  • Low-floor buses with boarding aids are marked by the sign for the disabled and are also used at night.

  • Getting on and off the bus via a ramp: Please wait close to the station mast and keep a safe distance of at least 30 cm from the kerb. Always use the door in the middle of the bus! To inform the driver that you want to use the ramp, press the red button when boarding or alighting. Outside the bus you’ll find the button at the right hand side of the middle door, and inside the bus in the middle of the space reserved for wheelchair users. The driver will allow for access via the ramp as soon as the other passengers have boarded or alighted. There are folding ramps which are manually activated by the driver as well as electro-mechanical ones. In the future, only the manually-operated folding ramps will be installed as they are less prone to interference. PLEASE NOTE: The doors close for a moment before the electro-mechanical ramp can extend. A distance of one metre is required to extend the ramp. Please keep your distance from the ramp. If the ramp hits an obstacle, it is retracted completely. Only then is a new attempt possible. Please board the lowered bus by keeping your wheelchair moving in a straight line. The incline of the ramp varies. To optimise access, kerbs are being elevated at a number of bus stops. The maximum load capacity is 250 kg.

  • The space reserved for wheelchairs is opposite the door. Please place your wheelchair with the back against the padded area so that you are facing away from the direction in which you travel. This is for safety reasons. Seats for passengers with restricted mobility are marked by a pictogram and located close to the doors.

  • To get off the bus please press the red button which you can find in the middle of the space reserved for wheelchair users.
