Welcome to the 190th Oktoberfest in Munich, which will take place from September 20 to October 5, 2025, at the Theresienwiese in Munich.

On this page, you will find information on how to get there, MVV tickets, and important tips for your visit to Oktoberfest.

Arrival

We recommend traveling by public transport. Oktoberfest is very easily accessible via public transport. However, it is advisable to avoid the overcrowded “Theresienwiese” U-Bahn station during Oktoberfest and instead use the following stops:

U-Bahn:

Poccistraße & Goetheplatz (U3/U6) for arrivals from the north or south
Schwanthalerhöhe (U4/U5) from the west

Train, S-Bahn, or long-distance bus:

By long-distance/regional train: Hauptbahnhof, followed by a short walk (approx. 1 km) to the Theresienwiese.
By S-Bahn or long-distance bus: Hackerbrücke/ZOB (ZOB = central bus station), then on foot (1 km)

Important: Air/foil balloons are prohibited near overhead power lines due to life-threatening danger and can cause serious disruptions.

By public transport - Getting to Oktoberfest

Most Oktoberfest tents and rides close around 11:30 PM. For a safe journey home, the transport providers offer reliable services.

U-Bahn

The U-Bahn (subways) runs daily until around 1:30 AM at 10-minute intervals. On weekends (Friday–Sunday), all lines additionally operate throughout the night at 30-minute intervals.

Nachtlinien

N17 and N19 have a rendezvous at Karlsplatz (Stachus) for convenient connections.
N40, N41, N45, N43, and N44 run on the ring line (Rotkreuzplatz – Münchner Freiheit – Ostbahnhof – Giesing).

S-Bahn

The S-Bahn (Sub-urban rails) runs from Monday to Friday until around 1:30 AM. On weekends and before public holidays, the last S-Bahn runs at around 2:30 AM. In general, more S-Bahn trains than usual are in service.

Bus & ODS

Several regional bus lines run daily with extended service until around 1:00 AM. The on-demand services (ODS) FLEX and RufTaxi also provide a convenient way to get home at night in many districts.

Information about Oktoberfest

If you are visiting Oktoberfest for the first time, you probably have more questions than just how to get there. That’s why we have compiled the most important points for you:

This year, Oktoberfest takes place from September 20 to October 5.
The festival grounds at the Theresienwiese can roughly be divided into three areas: beer tents (along Wirtsbudenstraße), rides and attractions (along Schaustellerstraße), and the Oide Wiesn (a more traditional section in the southwest of the grounds). Our Oktoberfest map gives you a good overview.
Entry to the Oktoberfest grounds is generally free. Only the Oide Wiesn area requires a 4-euro fee (free from 9 PM; children up to 14 years old and people with a disability ID with a degree of disability of 50% or more are always free). The entry fee supports tradition, customs, and culture in this part of Oktoberfest. In return, ride prices are comparatively low.
Opening hours: Most tents are open until 11:30 PM, with last drinks served at 10:30 PM (smaller tents at 11 PM). Käfer Wiesn-Schänke and Kuffler’s Weinzelt remain open longer. Between 1:30 AM and 9:00 AM, staying on the festival grounds is not permitted.
Luggage: Bags and backpacks brought with you must not exceed 3 liters in volume and must not be larger than 20 x 15 x 10 cm.
At entrances P1, P5, P8 & P10, luggage storage is available for a fee (€5). – Don’t forget to collect your belongings on time ;)
Glass bottles, spray cans containing harmful substances, corrosive or coloring substances, or objects that can be used as blunt, stabbing, or striking weapons are strictly prohibited. Bag checks are conducted. Umbrellas are allowed.
There are several drinking water fountains on the grounds where you can refill your water bottles for free (no glass bottles!). Locations are marked on our Oktoberfest map.
Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited in the tents. Cannabis is banned throughout the grounds.
On Saturdays and October 3, strollers and buggies are not allowed on the festival grounds. On other days, the restriction applies from 6 PM.
Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and similar items are not allowed on the festival grounds.
No animals are allowed, except for assistance dogs.
Some seating in the tents is reserved. During high demand, tents may be closed due to overcrowding.
The Wiesn Barometer indicates how busy Oktoberfest is expected to be on individual days.
Tuesdays are family days with various discounts for children (until 7 PM). Recommended areas for visiting with children are the Familieneplatzl and the Oide Wiesn. At the entrances, so-called child-finder bracelets are available. Please observe the rules regarding bags and strollers.
Oktoberfest has its own lost and found office. The Wiesn Lost & Found is located in the service center and is open daily during Oktoberfest from 1 PM to 10 PM. Lost something on the way? Contact details for the transport companies can be found here.

What else you should know..?

Oktoberfest is considered the largest folk festival in the world.
It has a long tradition, originating from a horse race held on the occasion of the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in 1810.
The name is misleading: due to supposedly better weather, most of Oktoberfest has been held in September since 1872.
Because of its location at the "Theresienwiese," Oktoberfest in Munich is also called the "Wiesn."
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary in 2010, the Oide Wiesn was introduced for the first time as a historical Oktoberfest.
To this day, the beer at Oktoberfest comes from Munich breweries. But be aware: the festival beer is a bit stronger than regular beer!
1 Maß = 1 liter of beer.
Noagerl: the stale, last sip in the beer mug.
1/2 Hendl: half a chicken. The Wiesnhendl is a traditional dish at Oktoberfest. Usually, side dishes (e.g., pretzel) must be ordered separately.
Contrary to clichés, vegetarian and vegan dishes are also available.
Entry to the beer tents is free. However, since some areas are reserved, it’s worth arriving early. Especially in the evenings and on weekends, tents may be closed if overcrowding is imminent.
Tipping is customary and expected by the servers.
The Münchner Stubn is the first tent in 2025 to accept only card payments. Even though card acceptance is increasing, cash payment is still recommended in many places.
On beer benches, standing and swaying along with the music is allowed in good spirits, but standing on beer tables is strictly prohibited!
Songs you should know: “Sweet Caroline,” “Angels,” and “Wackelkontakt.”
For a cozier and more traditional experience, visit the Oide Wiesn.
Chugging a Maß is not cool. Don’t do it!
Wear whatever you like. If you choose traditional attire (Tracht), keep in mind that it is not a carnival costume. We recommend shopping at traditional Tracht stores. And please, no chicken hats ;)
Traditions with the Dirndl: Bow placement on the apron: right = taken, left = single, center = virgin, back = widow or servers… of course, it’s entirely up to you where you tie your bow.
If you want to attend the Wiesn early on the first Saturday, be warned: beer is only served after the traditional keg tapping by the mayor at 12 PM.
There are around 40 beer tents and about 200 vendors at Oktoberfest (including roughly 80 rides).
Setting up Oktoberfest takes about 12 weeks every year. The most famous helper during the setup was reportedly Albert Einstein (1896).
In 2023, around 7.2 million visitors attended, the highest number to date.
This year, the price for a Maß ranges between €14.50 and €15.80.

Safe Wiesn Campaign "No Means No"

Even though visitors to Munich’s Oktoberfest simply want to enjoy a peaceful and joyful folk festival, girls and women are still at risk of sexualized violence and various assaults. For about 10 years, the “Sichere Wiesn” (Safe Wiesn) campaign has provided meaningful prevention work, on-site support, and follow-up care for girls and women in emergency situations.

On-site, you can find the organizers of this campaign in the so-called “Safe Space” at the service center near the Bavaria statue, behind the Schottenhamel tent.
