Park-and-ride facilities – planning, construction and operation

Park+Ride Guide

“Mobile Zukunft München”, the strategic alliance for mobility and logistics led by the Munich Transport Association, has set itself the goal of improving mobility for people in the Greater Munich area and simplifying access to a wide range of services. Park+Ride is one of the key intermodal components in this initiative, providing an optimal link between private car travel and local public transport. By 2024, there will be Park+Ride facilities at 187 stations within the Munich Transport and Tariff Association, offering around 32,000 parking spaces. This will enable people to change modes of transport early on and travel to their destination comfortably, in an environmentally friendly manner and without traffic jams – whether to work, for shopping or for leisure activities.

However, when implementing and operating Park+Ride facilities, the responsible local authorities are faced with many questions and challenges. For Park+Ride users, a common problem is that information, pricing structures and usage regulations are not always consistent, making a smooth switch to public transport difficult. In some key areas, there is also a need for the expansion of Park+Ride facilities in line with demand.

This guide addresses the wide range of issues involved in the planning, construction and operation of Park+Ride facilities and provides local authorities and planners with helpful information and suggestions for practical implementation or expansion. The brochure also offers valuable guidance on consistent, customer-focused information, the digitalisation of services, as well as potential funding schemes and key contacts.

MZM aims to make a small but effective contribution to encouraging a shift towards local public transport and local rail services, thereby also reducing car traffic on access roads. The aim is to make mobility in the region attractive, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
