Zones and fare calculation

The MVV zones determine which areas a ticket covers and how the fare is calculated based on the number of zones travelled through.

Fare zones

Fare zones determine how much a journey costs – the more zones you travel through, the higher the price.
The start and destination determine the required validity of the ticket.

The MVV area is divided into fare zones:

  • Zone M covers the entire city of Munich and parts of the surrounding areas.
  • Zones 1 to 12 cover the surrounding districts within the transport network.
  • Munich Airport is located in Zone 5.
  • Each stop on the network map shows the corresponding zone (e.g. Harthaus M/1).

Fare calculation

For each journey, the appropriate zone is selected based on the route (e.g. Zone M for journeys within the city or Zone M–5 to the airport).
Taking a detour is often cheaper, as zones passed through multiple times are only charged once.

The ticket is only valid for the zone(s) printed on it.
Many stops are located in two zones, which means that – depending on the direction of travel – the cheaper zone can be selected.
Examples:

  • Dachau → Laim → Zone M-1
  • Dachau → Petershausen → Zones 2–4

Maximum journey times by number of zones

  • 1 hour: short journey
  • 2 hours: Zone M or 2 zones
  • 3 hours: from Zone M-1 or from 3 zones
  • 5 hours: from Zone M-5 or from 7 zones
