Good to know – Single-day ticket
For the MVV day ticket, you must select the area of validity – that is, the zones through which your journey passes.
Important to note:
- Zone M covers the city of Munich and neighbouring areas.
- Zones 1–12 are located around Munich.
- Munich Airport is located in Zone 5.
Basic rule for day tickets:
You must select at least Zone M or two zones outside Zone M.
Examples:
- Main Station → Pasing (both in Zone M):
→ A day ticket for Zone M is sufficient. - Gauting → Feldmoching (Zone 1/2 → Zone M/1):
→ Zone M is passed through → a day ticket for Zones M–1 is required. - Neuaubing → Maisach (Zone M/1 → Zone 2/3):
→ Zone M is not passed through → a day ticket for Zones 1–2 is sufficient. - Sauerlach → Munich Airport (Zone 1/2 → Zone 5):
→ Travelling through Zone M → A day ticket for Zones M–5 is required.
→ Alternative: Airport-City-Day-Ticket
Tip:
The MVV network map shows the relevant zone for each stop (e.g. Harthaus = Zone M–1).
Some stops fall within two fare zones at the same time.
For example: Allach is in Zone M and Zone 1 (M/1).
This means that
, depending on the direction of travel, you can choose the cheaper zone – saving you money.
Examples:
- Journey from Allach to the main station:
→ A ticket for Zone M is sufficient. - Journey from Allach to Altomünster:
→ A ticket for zones 1 to 4 is required.
The day ticket is valid until 6.00 am the following day.
Tickets must be validated (stamped) before the journey.
However, there are exceptions:
- Tickets purchased on the bus or tram:
→ Already validated on purchase; no further validation required. - Tickets from Deutsche Bahn ticket machines:
→ You can choose between a validated and an unvalidated ticket.
Note on validation:
If the ticket says ‘validate here’, it must be stamped before the journey.
Yes, children aged between 6 and 14 need their own ticket – but not a single-day ticket.
There is a cheaper children’s day ticket available.
Tip: Children under 6 usually travel for free.
Since 1 January 2026:
No, since January 2026, children (aged 6–14) can travel free of charge on a single-day ticket. The following rules apply:
- Your own children: as many as you like.

- Grandchildren count as your own children.
- Nieces and nephews do not count as your own children.
