5 to 23 October 2026

Fit for school, fit for the future 2026!

A free competition for primary schools

The primary school competition for safe, active and sustainable mobility

Whether on foot, by scooter, by bike or by bus and train – this free initiative, run by a total of nine districts and towns within the MVV network, encourages children in a fun and age-appropriate way to choose a safe, active and environmentally friendly route to school.

The competition runs from 5 to 23 October 2026

During these three weeks, pupils who have actively covered at least the last 250 metres to school each morning will collect stickers on a class poster. The poster features a koala mum and her joey on a eucalyptus tree. With every sticker (‘eucalyptus leaf’), the children symbolically help to restore the koalas’ habitat. This makes daily physical activity visible and something to be experienced together.

Every participating class receives a certificate. In addition, the most active classes can look forward to further surprises.

The concept and graphics were developed by the Mobility Department of the City of Munich. All materials required to run the programme are provided free of charge as part of the ‘Mobile Future Munich’ alliance.

The deadline for entries is 7 August 2026

Any primary school in the following districts and towns can take part:

Competition schedule

In the week leading up to the start of the competition, teachers read their classes a child-friendly story about the koala’s natural habitat and then put up the koala poster in the classroom together. To prepare for the competition, teachers inform parents via a letter to parents.

Children who have travelled to school in an eco-friendly way this morning are allowed to stick a sticker on the poster. This also applies to children who have travelled the last 250 metres (roughly two blocks) to the school gate in an eco-friendly way. Over a period of three weeks, the children will see new leaves gradually growing on the eucalyptus tree on the poster, bringing back the koalas’ home and food.

After three weeks, the teachers use the counting aid to tally up the stickers and note the result, along with the number of children in each class, on the poster. This ensures that both small and large classes have an equal chance of winning, as the number of stickers is divided by the number of participating children.

Once the competition has taken place, the school will send a photo of each decorated poster to the email address of their contact person in the relevant district or town.

Through the competition, children discover just how enjoyable an active journey to school can be. It provides an important learning environment in which they develop independence, socialise and gain confidence in road safety. It also promotes the concept of sustainability, as with every successful day of the competition, the children work together to expand the koalas’ habitat on the poster.

At the same time, parents are made aware of how important an active, independent journey to school is for their children and how they themselves can help to ensure a safe traffic environment outside the school.

Ideally, this can lead to the development of a new daily routine in which, even after the competition has ended, the number of ‘parent taxis’ outside the school gates is reduced, thereby improving overall safety on the journey to school.

All participating classes will be awarded a certificate, and each participating school will receive a plaque that can be displayed either inside or outside the school building. There will be further surprises for the children in each district or town.

In addition, the most hard-working class from among all participating schools in the MVV network area will receive a fantastic prize: an exclusive guided tour of the Munich Transport Centre, where they can discover mobility from the past to the present in a fun and interactive way.

Once they have successfully registered, all participating schools will receive a ready-made information letter for parents, which clearly summarises the motivation behind the competition, how it works and the terms and conditions.

In addition, parents can be kept involved throughout the competition, for example through a weekly progress report or a photo of the decorated poster.
