During the summer months, Munich's BergBus runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays on two routes to popular excursion and hiking destinations that are difficult to reach by regular public transport.

Routes

  • Line 996: Munich → Pfronten (Ostallgäu) → Wieskirche (Weilheim-Schongau district)
  • Line 396: Munich → Bayrischzell → Leitzachtal / Ursprungpass (Miesbach district) → Thiersee (Tyrol)

MVV integration
Since May 2024, the BergBus has been fully integrated into the MVV. MVV fares apply, and passenger information is available via the usual MVV channels. The Deutschlandticket is also valid.

Reservations
Seat reservations are not mandatory, but are strongly recommended as capacity is limited.
Bookings can be made via:

  • MVV app
  • MVV information on the web at: mvv-auskunft.de

Important
As the buses travel on the motorway, standing room is not permitted. Every passenger therefore requires a seat.

The service is financed proportionally by the City of Munich and the districts of Miesbach and Ostallgäu. The Free State of Bavaria supports the service by covering 40 percent of the operating deficit. As with the tender process, MVV GmbH is responsible for operating the BergBus.

Background

Following the successful launch of the "Bergbus" pilot project by the Munich & Oberland Alpine Club in 2021, the Munich City Council commissioned the Mobility Department to develop a solution for the long-term operation and continuation of the service. In a working group led by MVV GmbH, the Mobility Department, the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Construction and Transport (StMB), the Munich & Oberland Alpine Club and the districts of Miesbach and Ostallgäu developed a concept for the new service, its financing and its integration into regular transport services.

By making the service permanent, the Munich BergBus will continue to offer a sustainable way to get from Munich to the mountains in the coming years. Furthermore, an expansion of the existing service is not out of the question.
