Joint launch of the regional bike-sharing scheme “MyRadl”

Today, in the square in front of the Deutsches Museum’s Transport Centre, the participating local authorities jointly launched the new regional bike-sharing scheme, “MyRadl”. Munich’s Lord Mayor Dominik Krause, Ebersberg’s District Administrator and spokesperson for the associated districts Robert Niedergesäß, and MVV Managing Director Dr Bernd Rosenbusch highlighted the benefits of the new integrated system, which will in future be available at around 1,000 locations in Munich and 36 other towns and municipalities

Dominik Krause, Mayor of Munich: “I am delighted that the new bike-sharing scheme is launching today in Munich and the surrounding region. With a fleet of 6,700 bikes across around 1,000 stations in 37 local authorities, the scheme encourages people to get out and about and discover the best of our city and the region from the saddle of a bike. MyRadl is a key component of sustainable mobility and a connected future – in combination with public transport and across municipal boundaries. My sincere thanks go to all the partners who have made this project possible, our Mobility Department, and the staff at MVV, in the local authorities and at our service provider Nextbike.”

Mobility Officer Georg Dunkel: “As the official bike-sharing scheme of Munich and 36 local authorities in the MVV area, MyRadl offers countless residents and visitors a sustainable way to get around. The bikes can be hired, used and returned across local authority boundaries – thereby linking the participating local authorities even more closely together. I am delighted that, following an intensive period of collaboration and preparation, we are now getting started, and I would like to thank everyone for their commitment. Have a good ride!”

Robert Niedergesäß, District Administrator of Ebersberg and spokesperson for the MVV member districts: “With the regional bike-sharing system MyRadl, we are providing residents with seamless connectivity to bus and rail services across district boundaries – something that has never existed before, which is why we are delighted that MyRadl is now launching.”

MVV Managing Director Dr Bernd Rosenbusch: “The aim of MyRadl is to reduce journey times and thereby attract more passengers to buses and trains. Simply hire a MyRadl bike at one of the approximately 1,000 MyRadl locations within the MVV network area, ride it to the underground, from the bus stop to the office or to the S-Bahn.”

nextbike CEO Sebastian Popp: “Together with the participating local authorities and MVV, we are creating a multimodal service that works across city boundaries and offers a genuine alternative to the car. Our aim is to make life in the city and the surrounding communities easier and more liveable. With their investment in municipal bike-sharing, the MVV and the participating local authorities are demonstrating how modern mobility needs to work today, and we are delighted to be getting started here with our latest bikes.”

The bikes have been distributed to the designated locations in the participating municipalities by the operator nextbike GmbH since 7 am this morning. By tomorrow morning, 8 May, a total of over 2,000 bikes will be available in all participating municipalities. In Munich, there will initially be 700 bikes, with numbers set to increase further in the coming days and weeks. In total, the “MyRadl” fleet will ultimately comprise 6,700 bicycles – traditional bicycles powered by muscle power and e-bikes (pedelecs, often referred to as e-bikes in everyday language). The bicycles can be easily hired around the clock via the app.

The City of Munich and the other local authorities within the MVV transport network area where “MyRadl” will be available will share the costs of introducing and maintaining the system. The MVV, the City of Munich and the District of Munich are funding parts of the bike-sharing system as part of the “MoveRegioM” project. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space as part of the “Research for Sustainability” (FONA) strategy.

In the district of Fürstenfeldbruck (Fürstenfeldbruck, Germering, Grafrath, Gröbenzell, Landsberied, Maisach, Mammendorf, Olching, Puchheim and Schöngeising) and in the municipalities of the NordAllianz (Eching, Garching, Hallbergmoos, Ismaning, Neufahrn, Oberschleißheim, Unterföhring and Unterschleißheim), the “MyRadl” bike-sharing scheme is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative. The aim of the programme is to promote cycling as a climate-friendly alternative to the car and to reduce CO₂ emissions.
