From 23 May 2026, at the start of the Whitsun holidays, the Munich BergBus will be running again, taking day-trippers and hiking enthusiasts to popular destinations that are otherwise difficult to reach by bus or train – from the Alpine foothills, through the Bavarian Alps and on to Tyrol. The Munich

BergBus will run every weekend and on public holidays until 25 October 2026:

  • The “396 BergBus” route runs towards Bayrischzell, Leitzachtal / Ursprungpass (Miesbach district) and on to Thiersee in Tyrol
  • The “996 BergBus” route runs to Pfronten in Ostallgäu and on to Wieskirche in the district of Weilheim-Schongau

Munich BergBus an integral part of the supra-regional public transport network

The Munich BergBus is primarily funded by the City of Munich and the districts of Miesbach and Ostallgäu, with the Free State of Bavaria also continuing to support the project. Initially operated as a three-year pilot project by the Munich & Oberland Alpine Club, the Munich BergBus has been integrated into the public transport network since 2024. In 2025, the buses were used by around 11,500 passengers, representing a 60 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

The booking tool developed within the MVV app was used by a large number of passengers last year (around 33 per cent on both routes), primarily for journeys to their destination. Booking is optional and is intended to give passengers the assurance of securing a seat. If there is still capacity available, the Munich Mountain Bus can always be used spontaneously without a booking. The reminder email introduced in 2025 for bookings has also proved its worth in providing information about last-minute cancellations by passengers.

Timetables and further information on the Munich BergBus can be found at www.mvv-muenchen.de/bergbus, where you will also find special tour collections from the Munich & Oberland Alpine Club.
