Since the launch of the regional bike-sharing scheme on 7 May 2026 in the state capital, Munich, and in the 36 surrounding towns and municipalities, just under 116,200 journeys (as at 18 June 2026) have been completed using MyRadl, with around a third of these on pedelecs. Analysis after just over a month shows that MyRadl is primarily used for short everyday journeys – such as connecting to buses and trains, for journeys within a town or municipality, or between districts. MyRadl is thus making an important contribution to climate-friendly mobility in the MVV area. On average, MyRadl was used for 19 minutes per journey, with
an average distance travelled of 2.4 kilometres.

Munich’s Second Mayor, Mona Fuchs: “Over 116,000 journeys in just over a month! MyRadl has got off to a flying start, and this is clearly evident on the roads. This is how straightforward mobility should be: districts and the city working hand in hand from Munich to Holzkirchen. It was important to us that people with public transport season tickets in particular should benefit – for them, the first 30 minutes on a bike are free – to make buses and trains more attractive. Many thanks to everyone in the city and the surrounding area who worked to make this possible.”

Georg Dunkel, Councillor for Mobility: “I can only agree – the system fills gaps in everyday mobility not just for Munich’s residents, bridges distances that are too far to walk, and makes it easier to switch to public transport. I am delighted that the scheme already has so many users right from the start – and is thus making an important contribution to sustainable mobility.”

Robert Niedergesäß, District Administrator of the Ebersberg district and spokesperson for the MVV network of districts and towns: “After just a few weeks, MyRadl is already demonstrating the potential of a joint regional bike-sharing scheme. It connects districts and local authorities across municipal boundaries and makes short journeys within the MVV area easier, more flexible and more climate-friendly. This is exactly how regional mobility can work in everyday life; the successful interplay of different modes of transport and the so-called ‘last mile’ are an important and fortunate combination.”

MVV Managing Director Dr Bernd Rosenbusch: “MyRadl has got off to a flying start; both the standard bikes and the e-bikes are being used extensively, particularly on journeys to and from bus stops and railway stations. The MVV app, the MVGO app and the nextbike app have coped wonderfully with the high volume of bookings, and by integrating booking and payment options into the apps, we have not only combined bus, train and cycle travel in terms of usage, but also made accessing MyRadl as straightforward as possible.”

Hire and return at any of the approximately 1,000 locations
MyRadl has been available in the MVV app, the MVGO app and the nextbike app since the system launched. After registering once in one of these apps, you can scan the
QR code on the rear wheel of the bike and start your journey. All MyRadl locations can be found on the interactive map in all three apps and on myradl.de. The map shows the areas within which the bike hire must be ended:

outside Munich, there is usually a pillar or a sign indicating the mobility or cycle point, and sometimes also road markings or cycle parking facilities.

In Munich, MyRadl uses what are known as ‘shared parking areas’. These can be recognised by a white-and-green border around the areas, as well as signs and road markings featuring vehicle symbols. There are also purely virtual locations, which are shown in the apps.

If the bike is not parked within a MyRadl location, a ‘service charge’ of 20 euros is payable.

Discounts with a public transport season ticket
The basic tariff for using MyRadl starts at one euro per 30 minutes for a standard bike and three euros per 30 minutes for an e-bike. MyRadl is particularly attractive for public transport season ticket holders*: the first 30 minutes of each standard bike hire are free, whilst the first half-hour on an e-bike costs 1.50 euros. To take advantage of these discounts, you need to register your relevant subscription number once. Monthly and annual subscriptions are also available.

Sebastian Popp, CEO of nextbike GmbH: “Our bid was successful because it was the most cost-effective and significantly below the previously estimated budget. This shows that quality and cost-effectiveness do not have to be mutually exclusive. A large proportion of the funds flows directly back to the citizens and thus benefits people immediately. I am keen to see how the summer weather and the campaigns that have just been launched will affect usage.”

Funding and financing
The City of Munich and the other local authorities within the MVV transport network area, where MyRadl will be available, will share the costs of introducing and maintaining the system on a pro rata basis. At MVV GmbH, as well as in the City of Munich and the District of Munich, certain aspects of the bike-sharing system are being funded as part of the ‘MoveRegioM’ project. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space as part of the ‘Research for Sustainability’ (FONA) strategy.

In the district of Fürstenfeldbruck (Fürstenfeldbruck, Germering, Grafrath, Gröbenzell, Landsberied, Maisach, Mammendorf, Olching, Puchheim and Schöngeising) and in the municipalities of the NordAllianz (Eching, Garching, Hallbergmoos, Ismaning, Neufahrn, Oberschleißheim, Unterföhring and Unterschleißheim), the MyRadl bike-sharing scheme, together with other cycling infrastructure measures, is 75 per cent funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative. The aim of the programme is to promote cycling as a climate-friendly alternative to the car and to reduce CO₂ emissions.

As shareholders in MVV, the Free State of Bavaria and the MVV network’s districts and towns are also supporting the project.

General information about MyRadl:

  • A total of just under 1,000 stations are planned in the participating local authorities, along with over 6,700 bicycles, around a third of which are pedelecs (often referred to as e-bikes). The system is currently being rolled out, with further bikes and stations to be added over the coming months.
  • From 2027, a further 15 areas will be added, comprising 280 bikes and 53
    stations.
