When and how can I take my bike on MVV services?

As a general rule, bicycles are permitted on MVV services – but not at all times or in all places. Different rules apply depending on the mode of transport, ticket and type of bicycle:

Underground

  • Restricted times: Monday to Friday from 6 am to 9 am and from 4 pm to 6 pm (excluding public holidays).
→ During Bavarian school holidays, the afternoon restricted period does not apply.
  • Ticket: A bicycle day ticket is required to carry a bicycle.
  • Exceptions:
    • Bicycles for small children up to 12.5 inches and folded bicycles may always be taken on board – without a ticket and without any restricted times.
    • Bicycles up to 20 inches may be carried free of charge, provided space and safety permit. The decision is made by the on-duty staff on a case-by-case basis.

S-Bahn

  • With an MVV daily cycle ticket: Restricted hours Monday to Friday from 6 am to 9 am.
No restricted hours apply during Bavarian school holidays.
  • With a Bavarian daily cycle ticket: No restricted times – bicycles may be taken on board at any time.
  • Ticket: Depending on the ticket chosen (MVV or Bavaria), a corresponding bicycle ticket is required.
  • Exceptions:
    • Bicycles for small children up to 12.5 inches and folded bicycles are always permitted – without a ticket and without restricted times.
    • Bicycles up to 20 inches may be carried free of charge if space and safety permit. Here too, the decision rests with the staff.
    • Tandems may be taken on board, but only with a day ticket for bicycles and subject to the restricted times.
    • With a BahnCard 100: Bicycle transport is free of charge provided you use the S-Bahn with your BahnCard 100.

Regional trains

  • Restricted times: There are no restricted times.
  • Ticket: A bicycle day ticket is usually required.
  • BRB trains (Bayerische Regiobahn):
    • Free transport is only permitted for bicycles that can be stowed under the seat – regardless of their dimensions.
    • Tandems may be taken on board in luggage vans and multi-purpose compartments – with a bicycle day ticket.
    • With a BahnCard 100: Bicycle transport is free of charge when travelling on approved regional trains.

Summary of exceptions:

  • Always permitted, without a ticket and without restrictions:
    • Children’s bikes up to 12.5 inches
    • Folded folding bikes
  • Permitted free of charge, provided space and safety allow:
    • Bicycles up to 20 inches (on trams, underground trains and approved regional trains)
  • Free of charge with a BahnCard 100:
    • On S-Bahn and approved regional trains
    • On the underground, a bicycle ticket is required even with a BahnCard 100
  • In individual cases, staff will decide whether a bicycle can be carried – particularly where space is limited or there are safety concerns.

Tip:
When choosing your ticket and planning your trip, bear in mind the school holidays in Bavaria so that you can take your bike with you with maximum flexibility.
