Good to know – Munich Card
Before purchasing the München Card, you need to select the area where the ticket is to be valid. There are three options:
- Zone M: Valid for the Munich city area and some nearby towns. Ideal for journeys within the city.
- Zone M – 6: Also covers the Munich surrounding area – e.g. the airport and other locations marked on the MVV network map.
- Zone M – 12 (children’s tickets only): Valid for the entire MVV network, including more distant destinations in the greater Munich area.
Tip:
The MVV network map helps you choose the right zone – especially if your destination isn’t yet decided.
The München Card can be purchased in various ways, depending on your needs:
Online:
Purchase via https://www.turbopass.de or the MVV Ticket Shop. The ticket can be printed directly as a PDF.
Via app (HandyTicket):
Free apps such as the MVV App and MVGO allow for cashless purchase and direct use on your smartphone.
In person:
Available from ticket machines at all MVG underground stations,
at the MVG customer centres at Marienplatz and Munich Central Station,
at the S-Bahn customer centres at Munich Central Station and Ostbahnhof,
and at the DB ticket office at Munich Airport.
Tip:
When purchased online, the ticket can be used immediately – either as a printout or directly on your mobile phone.
No registration is required if paying by credit card.
The validity of the München Card depends on the type selected:
Hourly ticket:
Valid from the time of validation for the specified number of hours. Validation takes place at the start of the first journey – either at a ticket machine or automatically for digital tickets.
Day ticket:
Valid until 6 am the following day.
Example: A 4-day ticket can be used until 6 am on the fifth day.
Tip:
For digital tickets (e.g. in the app), validity begins automatically upon purchase or activation – no separate validation is required.
The printed Munich Card (e.g. from a ticket machine or customer service centre) must be validated before your first journey.
You can validate it at the ticket validators in stations or at ticket machines.
OnlineTickets and HandyTickets are automatically valid from the moment of purchase or activation in the app – no validation required.
Tip:
Make sure the digital ticket is already activated when you board – otherwise it will not be considered valid.
