Good to know – Deutschland-Ticket (General questions)
The Deutschland-Ticket is ideal for anyone who regularly travels across Germany by public transport and wants to leave the car at home.
- The ticket is cheaper than most existing monthly tickets and season tickets in the MVV area.
- It is valid nationwide on buses, trams, underground trains, suburban trains and regional trains.
Important:
Passenger policies, transferability and similar additional services are not included with the Deutschland-Ticket. These may be more relevant to certain user groups than the price advantage.
You can cancel your subscription at any time by the 10th of the month, effective from the end of that month.
Recommended method of cancellation:
Directly via the MVV app:
- In the ‘Ticketshop’ tab, tap the profile icon (person icon) in the top right-hand corner.
- Under “Subscriptions”, select the desired subscription and cancel it using the “Cancel” button.
Alternative cancellation option:
When purchasing the Deutschland-Ticket, two emails were sent:
- The second email contains a personalised cancellation link that can be used to cancel the subscription.
- This link is also included in the monthly ticket notification for the following month.
The BahnCard 100 is valid exclusively on S-Bahn and regional trains within the MVV fare zone. It cannot therefore be used on the underground, trams or buses.
Currently, a Deutschlandticket is provided free of charge with the BahnCard 100. This is valid throughout the entire MVV fare zone for all public transport services, including the underground, trams and buses.
Important restrictions:
- The free carriage of children or bicycles, as permitted with the BahnCard 100, does not apply with the Deutschlandticket on the MVV network.
- Regular MVV tickets must be purchased for children and bicycles.
- Exception: When travelling exclusively by S-Bahn or regional trains within the MVV network, one bicycle may be carried free of charge.
An existing MVV season ticket can be converted to the Deutschlandticket.
The switch is made directly with the relevant transport operator with whom the current season ticket was taken out – for example, MVG, S-Bahn München or other MVV partners.
Important information:
- The switch is not automatic; you must actively apply for it.
- Links and forms for the switch (see above) are available on the websites of the respective providers.
- The Deutschlandticket can be cancelled on a monthly basis and can be used as a mobile ticket or a chip card.
Yes, the existing chip card can still be used, provided it is technically compatible and the new season ticket is correctly loaded onto it.
When switching to the Deutschlandticket, the chip card can continue to be used if the subscription has been converted via the relevant transport operator (e.g. MVG or DB) and the card has been updated.
Important:
- The chip card is usually updated at a ticket machine with an eTicket function or via the customer portal of the relevant subscription centre.
- Only one product can be stored on the chip card at a time. Previous subscriptions may need to be cancelled or overwritten.
- The chip card is valid for approximately five years and can be reused if you renew your season ticket.
According to the standardised national fare regulations, the Deutschlandticket is intended to be paid for on a monthly basis.
Transport operators may optionally offer an annual payment option, but without any additional discount compared to the monthly payment.
If you are interested in an annual payment plan, we recommend contacting the relevant transport company directly to enquire whether this option is available.
The Deutschlandticket is issued as a digital ticket as standard within the MVV network – as a mobile ticket via the MVV app or the transport operators’ apps.
Alternatively, the ticket can also be ordered as a chip card, e.g. via MVG or Munich S-Bahn. The chip card is delivered by post and may take up to 14 days to arrive.
Paper tickets are also available on a temporary basis, for example in the event of technical issues or whilst waiting for the chip card.
The Deutschlandticket is valid nationwide on regional and local transport.
Within the MVV fare zone, this includes:
- Regional trains (2nd class only)
- S-Bahn trains
- Underground trains
- Trams
- Regular buses

No. The Deutschlandticket is valid for 2nd class only.
First-class travel is not included and requires a separate booking, provided this is offered by the relevant transport operator.
Yes, the existing zone system will remain unchanged.
Tariff zones M to 12 continue to form the basis for fare calculation within the MVV.
- Zone M covers the entire city of Munich and neighbouring municipalities.
- Zones 1 to 12 cover the surrounding districts.
There are currently no plans to change the fare structure, as it continues to serve as the basis for single journeys and bar fares.
The existing fare options – such as multi-trip tickets, single tickets and day tickets – will remain unchanged.
They continue to be important for occasional travellers, tourists and people who do not use public transport on a daily basis.
MVV season tickets will also remain available.
However, it is expected that many passengers will opt for the Deutschlandticket, as it represents a simple and attractive option for regular users.
The Deutschlandticket is a season ticket for all age groups and is not available at a reduced rate for children or young people.
Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge and do not require their own ticket.
Children aged 6 and over require their own Deutschlandticket at the standard price.
Alternatively, affordable options such as the €365 ticket for school pupils and trainees remain available within the MVV area.
Children up to the age of 6 travel free of charge, provided they are accompanied by someone aged 6 or over.
Children aged 6 and over require their own ticket, e.g. a Deutschlandticket or another valid ticket under the MVV fare structure.
The rules on accompanying children do not apply to the Deutschlandticket.
This means: Children aged 6 and over cannot travel free of charge with the Deutschlandticket.
It is valid only for the registered person whose name appears on the ticket.
Photo ID must be presented upon inspection.
As a general rule,
there is a charge for carrying bicycles and dogs. However, regional exceptions apply, particularly within the MVV fare zone.
In the MVV fare zone, the following applies:
- One dog may be carried free of charge, regardless of whether the Deutschlandticket was purchased within the MVV network.
- For additional dogs, a ticket at the child fare is required.
- Bicycles over 20 inches require an MVV daily cycle ticket or a Bavarian daily cycle ticket.
- Bicycles up to 20 inches may be carried free of charge on S-Bahn and U-Bahn services, as well as on approved regional trains.
- Bicycles are not permitted on buses and trams.
- Bicycles for small children up to 12.5 inches and folded bicycles are considered luggage and may be carried free of charge on all modes of transport.
Please note the following restricted times:
- On the underground: weekdays Mon–Fri from 6 am–9 am and 4 pm–6 pm (the afternoon restriction does not apply during Bavarian school holidays).
- On the S-Bahn with an MVV day ticket for bicycles: weekdays Mon–Fri from 6 am to 9 am.
- On the S-Bahn with a Bavarian daily cycle ticket and on regional trains: no restricted times.

- trainees
- Students
- Volunteers
- Civil service trainees at qualification levels 1 to 3
Yes, the Deutschlandticket can also be used as a Jobticket.
Condition:
The employer must subsidise at least 25% of the ticket price.

- No minimum purchase requirement: The Jobticket can be offered for as few as one employee.
- Contractual commitment: The Jobticket is based on a framework agreement between the employer and the sales partner.
- Ticket format: Available as a mobile ticket or chip card, cancellable monthly and non-transferable.

Yes, surcharges may be applied for on-demand and flexible services.
These surcharges are determined by local fare regulations and apply, for example, to on-demand services, dial-a-bus schemes or special services that are not fully integrated into the regular public transport network.
Important:
- The Deutschlandticket covers standard local and regional transport.
- Additional services such as on-demand services cannot automatically be used with the Deutschlandticket if regional regulations stipulate a surcharge
Yes, the Deutschlandticket is also valid for journeys to certain border stations abroad.
These include, amongst others:
- Salzburg Central Station
- Kufstein
Important:
- Validity ends at the last German fare-charging station – in these cases, Salzburg Central Station and Kufstein.
- Domestic travel within Austria is not included – the ticket is only valid for journeys to and from Germany.
- The journey must be made on regional trains or local transport services, e.g. with the Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) or the ÖBB on the Freilassing–Salzburg route.
