Good to know – Single-day ticket
When purchasing an MVV day ticket, you must select the area of validity – i.e. the zones through which your journey will take you.
Important to note:
- Zone M covers the Munich city area and neighbouring areas.
- Zones 1–12 are located around Munich.
- Munich Airport is located in Zone 5.
Basic rule for day tickets:
You must select at least Zone M or two zones outside of M.
Examples:
- Central Station → Pasing (both in Zone M):
→ A day ticket for Zone M is sufficient. - Gauting → Feldmoching (Zone 1/2 → Zone M/1):
→ Zone M is passed through → Day ticket for Zones M–1 required. - Neuaubing → Maisach (Zone M/1 → Zone 2/3):
→ Zone M is not passed through → A day ticket for Zones 1–2 is sufficient. - Sauerlach → Munich Airport (Zone 1/2 → Zone 5):
→ Zone M is passed through → Day ticket for Zones M–5 required.
→ Alternative: Airport City Day Ticket
Tip:
The MVV network map shows the relevant zone for each stop (e.g. Harthaus = Zone M–1).
Some stops fall within two fare zones at the same time.
For example: Allach is in Zone M and Zone 1 (M/1).
This means that,
depending on the direction of travel, you can choose the cheaper zone – saving you money.
Examples:
- Journey from Allach to the main station:
→ A ticket for Zone M is sufficient. - Journey from Allach to Altomünster:
→ A ticket for zones 1 to 4 is required.
The day ticket is valid until 6 a.m. the following day.
Tickets must be validated (stamped) before the journey begins.
However, there are exceptions:
- Tickets from the bus or tram:
→ Already stamped on purchase, no further validation required. - Tickets from Deutsche Bahn ticket machines:
→ You can choose between a stamped and an unstamped ticket.
Note on validation:
If the ticket says “validate here”, it must be stamped before the journey.
Yes, children aged between 6 and 14 need their own ticket – but not a single-day ticket.
There is a cheaper children’s day ticket available for children.
Tip: Children under 6 usually travel for free.
A group day ticket is usually better value if there are more than one person aged 15 or over travelling together.
There is then no need to buy individual single-day tickets.
Tip:
The group day ticket is valid for up to 5 people.
