Carry-on baggage rules

Flexible travel, with clear rules on when children, dogs and bicycles can travel for free or at a reduced rate.

Children

Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge and may be carried in unlimited numbers; they must be accompanied if they are not yet of school age.

Children aged 6 to 14 can travel free of charge with the following tickets – on weekdays from 9 am, otherwise all day: Monthly Ticket, 9 am Monthly Ticket, Monthly Ticket S, Monthly Ticket Job and the Single Day Ticket.
You may take an unlimited number of your own children and grandchildren, and up to three other children.

Children cannot be taken along with the Monthly Ticket 65.

Group day tickets are valid for up to five adults, with children counting as half a person.

On nursery school trips, children aged six and over do not need their own ticket if they are travelling with their nursery.

Dogs

A dog may travel free of charge if you have a valid MVV ticket or a Deutschlandticket.

Additional dogs require a child’s ticket unless they can be carried in a basket or bag.

On all vehicles and in S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations, dogs must be kept on a lead and wear a muzzle if there is a risk to passengers.

Dangerous dogs are not permitted on board.

The breeds classified as dangerous dogs in Bavaria are specified in the list published by the Munich District Administration Office.

Bicycles

There is generally a charge for carrying bicycles.

Single-seater bicycles may be carried on S-Bahn trains, underground trains and approved regional trains.

Tandems are only permitted on S-Bahn trains or in luggage vans or multi-purpose compartments on approved regional trains.

Bicycles are not permitted on buses or trams, with the exception of children’s bicycles and folding bikes. Cargo bikes are generally not permitted.

With a BahnCard 100, bicycles may be carried free of charge on approved regional trains and S-Bahn services.

A daily cycle ticket is still required for carrying bicycles on the underground.

Wheelchairs and motorised wheelchairs

(Motorised) wheelchairs may be taken on buses and trams provided they can manoeuvre within an area of 1.5 × 1.5 metres. In addition, for the underground, buses and trams, the wheelchair must be no more than 1.25 m long, up to 80 cm wide and weigh no more than 300 kg, and must not obstruct the tram’s lift.

Electric mobility scooters for passengers with reduced mobility (e-scooters, 4-wheeled)

The following requirements apply for carrying these on public buses:

  • Manufacturer’s certificate confirming the technical specifications (4 wheels, max. 300 kg total weight, max. 1.2 m length, parking brake, ability to reverse, sufficient stability)
  • A severely disabled person’s pass marked with ‘G’ or proof of cost coverage by the health insurance provider
  • Written authorisation from the transport operator (upon request)

They may not be taken on trams.

Unlike e-scooters, these mobility scooters will continue to be carried on MVG buses and underground trains after 2 April 2024.

Electric scooters

Electric scooters (e-scooters) may only be carried on MVV services if they are folded up for transport.

Since 2 April 2024, they may only be carried on regional trains and S-Bahn services

On MVG services – i.e. the underground, trams and city buses in Munich – they are no longer permitted from this date.

Individual transport operators decide independently on the carriage of e-scooters on MVV regional buses; it is recommended that you check with the relevant operator before travelling.

Exclusion of large and heavy items

The transport of Segways, handcarts and larger or heavier items measuring more than 80 × 90 cm or weighing more than 25 kg is not permitted on the MVV network.

This rule is intended to ensure that escape routes remain clear, accidents are prevented and vehicle capacity is used efficiently.

Whether an item may nevertheless be carried in individual cases is at the discretion of the staff.
