The S monthly ticket (social ticket) is available to people who receive state benefits.
These include, amongst others:
- Income support
- Basic income support for the elderly
- Recognised reduced earning capacity under SGB XII
- Unemployment Benefit II and Social Assistance under SGB II
- Benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act
The ticket is only valid in conjunction with a valid LandkreisPass, München-Pass or Rosenheim-Pass and is always issued for one calendar month.
Note: Anyone completing a Federal Voluntary Service or a voluntary social or ecological year should use the Bavarian Concessionary Ticket instead.

Good to know – Monthly Ticket S
The Munich Pass is issued to people resident in Munich who receive certain state benefits or social assistance. These include:
- Basic income support for the elderly and those with reduced earning capacity under SGB XII
- Citizen’s income under SGB II
- Benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG)
- People in the Federal Voluntary Service or undertaking a voluntary social or environmental year
The pass is also issued to:
- Recipients of housing benefit or child supplement, as well as their family members
- Young people in supervised independent living under economic youth welfare
- People on low incomes whose income is below Munich’s at-risk-of-poverty threshold (excluding: au pairs, apprentices, students)
- People whose income does not exceed the statutory subsistence level and whose assets are less than €5,000
Where to obtain it:
The München-Pass is issued exclusively at the Social Services Centres and at the City of Munich’s Office for Housing and Migration.

The Rosenheim Pass and the LandkreisPass are issued to people aged 15 and over who are resident or habitually resident in a district within the MVV transport network. The following are eligible for the pass:
- Recipients of income support or basic income support for the elderly and those with reduced earning capacity under SGB XII
- Recipients of citizen’s income under SGB II
- Recipients of benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG)
Issuing location:
The pass is issued exclusively via the social services departments in the district offices of the following association districts:
The entire city of Munich and some surrounding municipalities are grouped together in Zone M.
There are no fare boundaries within the city of Munich.
Fare zones can be purchased individually.
For many ticket types, one or two zones cost the same.
Examples of required zones:
- Central Station (Zone M) → Pasing (Zone M/1)
➝ Ticket for Zone M required - Gauting (Zone 1/2) → Feldmoching (Zone M/1)
➝ Ticket for Zones M – 1, as Zone M is passed through - Neuaubing (Zone M/1) → Maisach (Zone 2/3)
➝ Ticket for Zones 1–2 required, as Zone M is not passed through - Sauerlach (Zone 1/2) → Munich Airport (Zone 5)
➝ Ticket for Zones M – 5, as Zone M is passed through
Many stops are located in two fare zones at the same time – for example, Allach M/1, which is in Zone M and Zone 1.
This classification is shown in the MVV network map with fare zones.
Depending on the direction of travel, you can choose the cheaper zone:
- Journey from Allach to the main station:

The monthly pass is valid for the duration of a calendar month and beyond, until 12 noon on the first working day of the following month. If that working day falls on a Saturday, the pass remains valid until 12 noon on the next working day.
Children aged 6 to 14 may travel free of charge on weekdays from 9 am, as well as 24 hours a day at weekends and on public holidays.
You may bring any number of your own children and grandchildren, provided you can provide proof of their relationship to you.
Otherwise, a maximum of three children in the specified age group.
Tip:
The free travel rule applies only to children – adults require their own ticket.
The S 9 monthly ticket is not valid on Mondays to Fridays between 6 am and 9 am.
Outside these times, it can be used 24 hours a day.
This restriction also applies during school holidays, but not on public holidays or on 24 and 31 December.
When purchasing the S monthly ticket (social ticket), you will need the 7-digit passport and validation number found on your München-Pass, Rosenheim-Pass or LandkreisPass. This number must be entered at the ticket machine or provided to the sales staff at the time of purchase.
The number on the pass must match the number on the season ticket purchased.
Three documents are required for travel authorisation:
- the Monthly Ticket S,
- the valid pass (Munich, Rosenheim or LandkreisPass),
- a photo ID, if the pass does not contain a photo.
All three documents must be presented during a ticket inspection.
