Shared e-mobility in the MVV area

E-scooters and sharing may sound like Anglicisms, but they get to the heart of the matter. "To scoot" means to drive fast or speed away, and "sharing" describes the joint use of vehicles or services.

Services offered by Dott, emmy, Lime and Bolt enable flexible and uncomplicated travel, especially in areas where public transport does not provide complete coverage. E-scooters and e-kickscooters complement the low-emission mobility mix in the MVV area and offer a practical alternative for short journeys or connections between modes of transport.

Shared mobility providers make their vehicles available for hire, including clear rental conditions. These agile two-wheelers thus contribute to modern, sustainable mobility in the MVV area.

E-scooter sharing in the MVV area

Electric scooter sharing

Electric scooters are heavier, more stable and more comfortable than electric kick scooters, as they are similar to mopeds and have a seat. They are easy to use: install the app, register, find a scooter, unlock it, put on a helmet and off you go. You can end your journey anywhere within the rental area where the scooter can be parked legally and without causing any obstruction.

Important rules:

  • Helmets are compulsory – a helmet is always on board.
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • EU/EEA driving licence required (motorcycle class A or car class B).
  • Speed limit of 50 km/h.
  • No alcohol, no drugs, no impairing medication.
  • A second person may be carried; two helmets should be on board.
  • Anyone who cannot reach the footrests or hold on securely is not permitted to ride.
  • Not permitted on MVV public transport.

E-scooter sharing

E-scooters are particularly suitable for short distances and are usually cheaper than e-mopeds. They are easy to use: install the app, register, select a nearby scooter, unlock it and off you go. You can end your journey anywhere within the rental area where the scooter can be parked legally and without causing any obstruction.

Important rules:

  • Minimum age: 18 years (according to the provider's terms of use).
  • No driving licence required.
  • Maximum speed of 20 km/h.
  • No helmet required, but a helmet is recommended.
  • Use on cycle paths, cycle lanes, cycle routes or hard shoulders.
  • If there is no cycle path, the road must be used.
  • Pavements and pedestrian zones are off limits.
  • No alcohol, no drugs, no impairing medication.
  • Only one person per scooter is permitted.
  • Not permitted on MVV public transport.

Not permitted, with a few exceptions!

Can you take e-scooters on MVV transport?

Transporting e-scooters on MVV public transport so that you can cover the last distance to your destination in a relaxed manner after getting off? Sounds clever, but for several reasons it is only permitted to a very limited extent. The reasons for this are the mostly bulky design, the risk of accidents due to tripping in public transport, lack of space and safety-related incidents (battery fires).

However, there are exceptions: The following regulations apply as of 4/2024:

electric scooter

Due to its size and weight, it is prohibited to take this item with you on any form of transport using the MVV fare system!

(MVV Tariff)

E-scooters on regional trains, suburban trains and regional buses (MVV fare)

E-scooters can be taken along free of charge as "property" if certain conditions are met:

Requirements for transport:

  • Must befoldable and transported in a folded state.
  • Maximum size: 90 × 80 cm (longest dimensions).
  • Maximum weight: 25 kg.
  • Battery is permanently installed or securely locked in place.
  • Always carry folded in stations, mezzanines and at stopspushing is not sufficient.

E-scooters that may not be transported:

  • All models from sharing providers such as Dott, Lime, Voi or Bolt.
  • Reason: not foldable, too large, too heavy and not compatible with the providers' terms of use.
