Shared electric vehicles for flexible mobility and a more enjoyable driving experience.

Scooter-Sharing

E-scooter sharing provides a fast, convenient and low-emission means of transport wherever public transport leaves gaps.

Shared e-mobility in the MVV area

E-scooters and sharing sound like Anglicisms, but they capture the essence well. “To scoot” means to ride quickly or whizz off, and “sharing” describes the joint use of vehicles or services.

Services from Dott, emmy, Lime or Bolt enable flexible and hassle-free travel, particularly in areas where public transport does not provide full coverage. E-scooters and e-kickscooters complement the low-emission mobility mix in the MVV area and offer a practical alternative for short journeys or connections between modes of transport.

Shared mobility providers make their vehicles available for hire, with clear terms and conditions. These agile two-wheelers thus contribute to modern, sustainable mobility in the MVV area.

Electric scooter sharing

Electric scooters are heavier, more stable and more comfortable than electric kick scooters, as they are similar to mopeds and have a seat. They are easy to use: install the app, register, find a scooter, unlock it, put on your helmet and set off. You can end your journey anywhere within the hire zone where the scooter can be parked legally and without causing an obstruction.

Important rules:

  • Helmets are compulsory – a helmet is always provided.
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • EU/EEA driving licence required (Class A motorcycle or Class B car).
  • Maximum speed: 50 km/h.
  • No alcohol, no drugs, no medication that impairs judgement.
  • A second passenger is permitted; there should be two helmets on board.
  • Anyone who cannot reach the footrests or hold on securely is not permitted to ride.
  • Not permitted on MVV public transport.

Electric scooter sharing

Electric kick scooters are particularly suitable for short journeys and are usually cheaper than electric scooters. Using them is straightforward: install the app, register, select a nearby scooter, unlock it and set off. You can end your journey anywhere within the hire area where the scooter can be parked legally and without causing an obstruction.

Important rules:

  • Minimum age: 18 years (according to the providers’ terms of use).
  • No driving licence required.
  • Speed up to 20 km/h.
  • Helmets are not compulsory, but are recommended.
  • Use on cycle paths, cycle lanes, cycle routes or hard shoulders.
  • If there is no cycle path, the road must be used.
  • Pavements and pedestrian zones are off limits.
  • No alcohol, no drugs, no medication that impairs judgement.
  • Only one person per scooter permitted.
  • Not permitted on MVV public transport.

With a few exceptions, this is not permitted!

Can I take an e-scooter on MVV transport?

Transporting e-scooters on MVV public transport so you can cover the final stretch to your destination in comfort once you’ve alighted? It sounds like a smart idea, but for several reasons it’s only permitted to a very limited extent. The reasons include their generally bulky design, the risk of accidents caused by tripping on board, lack of space, and safety concerns (battery fires).

However, there are exceptions: the following regulations apply as of April 2024:

Electric scooter

On all modes of transport covered by the MVV fare scheme, carrying such items is prohibited on grounds of size and weight!

(MVV Tariff)

Electric scooters on regional trains, S-Bahn services and regional buses (MVV fare)

E-scooters can be carried on board free of charge as “luggage” provided certain conditions are met:

Requirements for carrying on board:

  • Foldable and transported in a folded state.
  • Maximum dimensions: 90 × 80 cm (longest dimensions).
  • Maximum weight: 25 kg.
  • The battery must be permanently fitted or securely locked in place.
  • Always carry folded in stations, mezzanines and at stopspushing is not permitted.

E-scooters that may not be transported:

  • All models from sharing providers such as Dott, Lime, Voi or Bolt.
  • Reason: not foldable, too large, too heavy and not compatible with the providers’ terms of use.

E-scooters on the underground, trams and city buses in Munich (MVV fare)

MVG operates the underground, trams and city buses within the Munich city limits.
Due to safety concerns, the following rule has been in force since April 2024:

There is a strict ban on bringing electric scooters – regardless of type or model – onto all MVG transport services.
